Workplace fatalities by focus area

These statistics show the number of fatal work-related incidents reported to WorkSafe New Zealand under the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992 and the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015.

They do not include deaths in the maritime or aviation sectors or fatalities due to work-related road crashes. These are investigated by Maritime New Zealand, the Civil Aviation Authority and the New Zealand Police respectively.

Focus Area fatalities differ from the Industry Fatality statistics. In addition to Industry Fatality statistics (e.g. construction, forestry and logging), they also include fatalities from other industries working in the Focus Area (for example, a civil construction worker who is killed while working on forestry roads). The purpose of the Focus Area statistics is to give sectors a full picture of all fatalities occurring within the sector. Industry fatalities are recorded according to the main industry in which the primary duty holder operates.
